arrived in Socorro in 1881 and Magdalena in 1883. The mines boomed, producing most of the lead in New Mexico for twenty years. A large smelter was built in Socorro to handle the output from the Kelly mines and other area mines. Socorro grew quickly into a town of 5,000 people by the mid-1880s; Magdalena grew to 1,300 and Kelly to 800 people. Good supplies of coal and limestone near Socorro helped with smelting the ore. Another smelter was built between Kelly and Magdalena. Beginning in the 1890s, the boom began to subside, and most mining ending by 1931.

Aside from the white stucco church, little remains today of Kelly, other than foundations and a few stone walls. Old mines and rusting steel head frames dot the mountain slopes above the town site. Most of the mines are on private property; please respect the owners’ wishes in regard to trespassing. Old mines are dangerous, so be very careful around open shafts and tunnels.
